Game 5 - Battle Missions

One thing I decided early on from the beginning of the series, was that every 5 games I was going to do a special mission. I felt that this would hopefully keep things a bit fresh and interesting! The real challenge would be to find a variety of missions to play over the course of 50 games, but you'll see more on this later if you're going to follow up with the blog.

So first up was a scenario from the Battle Mission supplement. My opponent today was Peter, and he was very happy to oblige being filmed, in exchange for him being allowed to use his shiny forge world contemptor dreadnoughts! Peter was using his Raven Guard for this one (and this was the second game in a row where my opponent was using Shrike with 10 hammernators - no infiltration this time around thank goodness!). Peter also has a Dark Angels Deathwing army too, something which i'm sure he will be picking up again when the new codex rolls out in January (or so the internet rumour mills have been saying).

To decide the battle mission, we first each rolled a D6 - the faction rolling the highest would select from their missions (for those who don't own the battle missions supplement, each army has a number of missions assigned to it). We then randomised from the imperial guard missions, and ended up with Trench Warfare. Hope you enjoy this one, it has some funny moments!

Game 4- Brothers in Arms!

Game 4 was a very cool game! I was up against the double team of my good buddy Tama and his brother Nico! Tama is another of my good friends, and hails from the mighty New Zealand! In this video you see some cool (haha) shots of my living room, as we squeeze 2 huge tables into a very small space! Tama and I had arranged the game, but Nico wanted to get in on the action as well.

So we decided that those guys would ally and take 1000 points of each army - maybe this was a forewarning of 6th edition? This game was a total blast, and there was some epic fail shooting from my own stuff as well...

Game 3 - Lee's Blood angels!

So i've done a couple of recordings by this point, and i'm starting to get a good feel for the camera, and how to handle the reports. I decided that I would maybe improve the presentation of the videos a bit, by adding some music, and splicing in some turn dividers as well. This was to be consistent throughout the video series, and I'm glad I did - certainly when I go back and watch these, I find following the action is a lot clearer.

My next opponent, is my good friend Lee! At this stage (seems a while ago now!), Lee had recently switched over to playing blood angels, having previously spent most of his time as a Space Wolf (note the beard, it's not a coincidence!). Lee also has an Eldar army (which has been hiding for a while), and more recently a Chaos Space Marine army based on (I want to say the night lords trilogy? I think it's that) black library fluff.

One thing that Lee and I like to do on occasion, is (if we have time) swap armies. We will often take control of each other's forces after our original game to see if we can change the result. It's a great exercise doing this, as its not only useful tactical insight, but it's a cracking good laugh!

At this point I was still relatively new to my Imperial Guard army, so coming up against Lee was going to be one of my toughest challenges so far. This one sure had some memorable moments, and I hope you enjoy them as much as we did!

Game 2 - Simon's Green Tide

So the first game had been recorded without any issues, and it was definately fun fighting John's Chaos Space Marine army. One thing I should say is that im an avid Chaos hater - not because I think their fluff sucks, or because their rules are cheesy - but because they are traitors! It's taken in good humour in our community, as many people would testify to me haivng a bit of nerdrage when someone brings out a Chaos army. I love fighting against them!

Simon was up next, and (at the time of writing) is currently a member of staff at GW Glasgow. He was very interested in my video idea, and proceeded to dig out his orks. I have to say, i've never been so happy to roll Spearhead in my life! You'll understand when you see his army!

After this video some of the production starts to improve a little, I hope you've been able to follow it so far!

Game 1 - John's Chaos Space Marines

So to start my quest I needed to get some gamers to agree to being filmed. I decided that the format would be best if I just summarised turns and kept the focus on my opponent (since i'd end up doing most of the talking). I spoke to John, and he was more than happy to help me out.

I should say that the quality of the videos does improve as the series progresses - watching these early videos made following the action difficult, and i say that as someone who actually played in the game!

The Idea

Hi, and thanks for checking out my page!

I'm Liam, and i'm a 40k gamer from the Glasgow region in the UK. I've been playing Warhammer on and off for about 15 years, and I got back into wargaming at the start of 2010. I've been collecting Black templars since I was 11 (and saw them on the cover of the 3rd edition rulebook), but I hadn't really expanded my hobby beyond them much.

In 2010 I decided that I would experiment, and try some new armies. I initially started an Ork army, and found this very enjoyable - if different to my Templars. From the start of 2010 till the summer of that year I was living in Gloucester, and primarily gamed in the local GW there. My main rival (and very good friend) was Martin, an avid Death Guard player. Life got in the way (as it tends to do), and in June of 2010 I moved back into Glasgow.

It seemed natural to check out the local GW, and on my first visit there I met my (soon to be one of my best) friend Ross for the first time. He'd recently gotten into the hobby with a Chaos army, and he was still looking to learn the ropes. From that point on we would go into th shop together, looking to find more opponents and make more friends. Two and a half years on from then, I'm happy to say that we've both made a lot of new friends in Glasgow, and that gaming (and commiserating in the pub afterwards!) is never dull!

I'm not really sure what inspired me to start this video series. I remember reading an article a while back on Dakka Dakka titled "50 games in 50 weeks", which was a written series of battle reports. I remember reading many of these at the time, and finding them very impressive. Also, many of our friends are starting to move on in other aspects of their lives, be that with work, education or family. I decided that the time was right earlier this year to "chronicle" our community. If nothing else, it would be something to laugh at 20 years down the road!

The battle reports that are part of this blog are broken into 4 sections. There are 3 sections of 15 games, and one section of 5 games. These will all feature me using a different army in each section. There are also various "bonus" videos, capturing events or games that I couldn' otherwise slot into the busy recording schedule.

Most of these videos have now been uploaded to youtube, but I also wanted to share some thoughts about each game, or the person playing in each game.
